Insanity to Serenity:
Ministry Insights for Navigating Mental and Spiritual Health Challenges
Research suggests that 25% of churchgoers face mental health concerns and 23% of pastors experience mental illness. Drawing on his MA in Practical Theology, 25 years as a ministry consultant and mental health coach, and lived experience with bipolar disorder, Tim Reside offers ministry leaders practical guidance for self-care and compassionate pastoral care.
Kathy Hoppe, EdD, LMFT, and co-author of Trauma and Crisis Counseling, writes:
“If you want to understand the complexities of mental health from the inside or feel alone in your own struggle, Tim’s story is an encouraging companion. I appreciate both the healing Tim experienced and his candid approach to connecting faith with mental health.”
Tim Reside recently published his memoir, Insanity to Serenity: Surviving & Overcoming Bipolar Disorder. He and his wife, Nancy, are celebrating 55 years of marriage, 25 years of mental health ministry through Bright Tomorrows, and 47 years of personally navigating mental and spiritual health challenges—experiences reflected in Tim’s new book.
Regarding the book, Tim Peterson, MS, LPC, LMFT, Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital, and Co-Founder of Bright Tomorrows writes:
“I am very excited to see this long-awaited book come to life and to share it with others who will benefit from this journey into mental illness and the redemptive insights gleaned from a lifetime of faithful response to it.”
YOU CAN EXPECT TO:
- Gain insight from someone who understands what it is like to be among the 20–25% affected by mental and spiritual health challenges and who has learned how to offer a healing presence to others in that same journey.
- Examine the redemptive grace and transformative power of a “wounded healer” approach to ministry.
- Reflect on the relationship between spiritual healing and physical cure, including the questions, “Can healing happen without cure?” and “Can cure happen without healing?”
- Unpack a practical way to remain grounded in Christ’s healing presence, return to it when distracted, minister from it to others, and help others do the same.
TIM RESIDE has served as President of Bright Tomorrows since 2009 and has been part of the organization since 2001. A licensed and ordained minister for more than 50 years, he holds an MA in Practical Theology and serves with his wife, Nancy, as a Mental Health Coach and Consultant. His MHC designation refers to his lived experience as a mental health consumer with bipolar disorder and long-term treatment, which informs his educational and inspirational support for others. He and Nancy have two married children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Tim lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
